Do you Remember That Smell?

My grandmother wore a certain perfume – and although she passed away almost 22 years ago, whenever I get a whiff of it – I instantly remember her.  As we grow up, I think many of us could attest to the impact that our sense of smell has on us.

A newborn’s sense of smell helps him/her identify his mother and follow to his/her necessary food source.  In fact, within just a few days of birth, a newborn will show preference for his/her own mother’s breast milk than another’s, and plays a significant role in bonding between mother and infant.

Not only is smell linked to building relationships, it is also tied strongly to our memory. (Hence, the instant visualization of my grandma when I smell her perfume!)

Using Essential Oils in your home – whether you find one scent that you really love, or get creative and mix and match your own scents – can leave a lasting impression on your family members and anyone who visits your home.  While Aromatherapy is more than just burning a vanilla candle and should be left to trained medical professionals, the use of essential oils to add to the pleasant aroma of your home is easy and inexpensive!

NOTE: Some essential oils can be downright dangerous if used during pregnancy!!!  They may be simply irritating – but some can be plain toxic.  Here’s a handy list of essential oils to avoid during pregnancy – and ALWAYS consult your health care professional before using essential oils while pregnant!

Although they are derived from nature, the misuse of essential oils can be harmful.  Just because it is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s perfectly safe – I mean, really – Would you eat poison ivy?

On the other hand, using essential oils throughout your home in a variety of purposes, can be helpful and pleasing. For a list of benefits and uses, click here: Essential Oils Profiles

Peppermint for cleaning (at least in my home) tends to keep my brain focused on the task at hand, gives me a lift in my spirit, and really helps me think less about the “ick” factor while I’m cleaning.  The beneficial effects of peppermint are said to be: Refreshment, Stimulation.  I would have to agree.

Now, here’s a recipe for a combination of oils said the offset PMS symptoms.  I have not tried this yet – but I’m going to gather the ingredients together so I can!  Anything that helps!!!  I once bought a nighttime body lotion advertised as a help to sleep, and Clary Sage and Lavendar were two of the included scents.  I can tell you that using the cream, absolutely helped me relax and I tend to lean towards trying this from my previous experience.

That’s the great thing about Essential Oils.  You can see what works for you.  Visit your local health food store and find their selection of Essential Oils.  Take some time sampling and smelling – walk away every few minutes and find some coffee to smell if you can to give your nose a break.  Or sample some creams and lotions or soaps with scents and see what you think or how they make you feel.  I tend to avoid Lavender.  I don’t care for it a whole lot, except when it is combined with other oils…

If you decide to use an Essential Oil on your skin, it is really important to add a drop or two to another “carrier” oil – like olive oil or coconut oil.  Direct contact can be very irritating – Essential Oils are highly concentrated from plants, and if you have any allergies, you’re likely to have a reaction of some kind.  Diluting the Essential oil with another oil, provides the benefits of the essential plant, with the buffer of the carrier oil.

Here are some great online Essential Oil sources:

Don’t just take my word for it – do some research, check some books from your library – and find how if the addition of Essential Oils can benefit you!

Smell ya later!

I’m Singin’ In the Rain…

Making your home sing Mondays

Have you ever tried to actually Sing in the Rain?  Usually I’m a bit “froggier” during wet weather so I don’t sing with as much gusto, but I’m usually singing in my head at least…

I’ve found that doing my “chores” around the house is SOOOOOOO much better if I am listening to praise & worship music – or tappin’ your foot contemporary Christian music.  I get in a “groove” and if I’m singing while I work, the work seems to go by much faster.  I’m amazed at what I can accomplish in a short amount of time, if I’m thinking about what I’m singing rather than how many times I have to wash dishes every day…

I’ve also learned, that scent has an effect on my cleaning power, too.  Since I’ve been using more naturally derived – homemade cleaners, I enjoy cleaning more.  Much of my cleaning creations include a peppermint scent – which is just happy and bright – and doesn’t give me a headache!  Peppermint gives me a real boost – it’s energizing – and very pleasant.  There are other essential oils – like grapefruit, lavendar, eucalyptus – that will also leave a fresh scent that offers a bit of aromatherapy…

On a day when I’m down in the dumps or feeling depressed – honestly, if I will myself to get up and grab my homemade cleaner – not only do I accomplish something, but I actually feel brighter in spirit…

A Little of This, A Dash of That

We’ve been experiencing random glitches in our computer world this week.  Really, they’re still a bit inexplicable, but I’m here now, so I’m running with it!

Don’t forget – my cookbook giveaway ends tonight.  Be sure to leave your comment for the Once A Month Cooking Family Favorites cookbook for your chance to win!

BLOG RELOCATION

It’s coming!!!  I’m working on the new site to get it up and ready.  Really!  I’m kinda excited about it and will definitely make the announcement when everything’s ready.

UPDATE ON CADEN

My now 4 year old nephew, Caden, diagnosed with leukemia in August 2008 – has entered the maintenance phase of his treatment!  He has had some bumps along the way – his counts have been all over the place and he’s had much isolation, but he’s making progress!  With flu season around the corner, it’s especially important for his family to stay healthy and avoid the flus of the season!  The maintenance phase is going to allow for LESS TRAVEL for he and his family and more routine in their schedule! YES!  Thank you, Lord!  The doctor even suggested the idea of preschool for the spring – so it’s a really big deal!

MOMMIES COFFEE BREAK

Yep, I’m blogging at both places.  But other than having a final exam in my counseling class this week and despite computer glitches – things are going okay so far!  Just excited about getting the new blot site revealed!  Hang on tight – it won’t be long…

FOR TODAY -October 12, 2009

Outside my window… it is dark and coooooold!

I am thinking… about the week ahead.

I am thankful for… girls who slept until 6 am this morning, after getting up before 5 am for the past two days…

From the kitchen… feel like baking, but don’t know what just yet.

I am wearing… well, I’m still in my jammies, getting my girls breakfast and making coffee.

I am creating… nothing yet, but I’ve got the whole day ahead of me.

I am going… to go wake my hubby up. =)

I am reading… Lies Women Believe – and he Truth that sets them free…

I am hoping… that it doesn’t stay cold today, although we’ve got snow flurries in our forecast this week.

I am hearing… Wow, Wow, Wubbzy on nickjr…

Around the house… will do some straightening and cleaning and get laundry done today!  LOVE clean laundry.

One of my favorite things… dishwashing gloves for sensitive skin that don’t make my hands break out!

A few plans for the rest of the week: This week is fairly free of appointments – but Curly & I are planning to pick apples on Friday!  Ooooh how I love Fall!

Here is picture for thought I am sharing…

One thing I particularly love about Fall is the contrast of colors.  While we may not be able to mix and match any color to please the eye, there is something about the colors of God’s creation that complement and contrast one another in the most lovely way…

Marvy Monday

Sorry this is a late post!  I spent the morning at Curly’s school – I’m going to be volunteering there a few mornings a month while she’s in class – helping with teacher projects and clerical stuff.  YAY!  Just a couple of mornings a month – although I’d love to spend more time there cutting out letters for bulletin boards – copying, collating and stapling – laminating!

But I’m really trying to shift my focus.  My focus has been “off” for some time.  I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants – struggling to GET and STAY motivated with projects and housework and being a wife and mom.

I’ve read and heard some pretty convicting stuff lately and know I have much to surrender.

Today, Roy stayed home with Georgie while I was at school – and they’re all napping now, so I am going to do some straightening, get my focus for the week on track (asking God to take the pilot’s seat since I’m really just a passenger) and getting things in order.

God has been doing EXCITING things in my life – in our home – in our family – and while I could really busy myself up (and have the inclination to do so), today I am going to work on laundry and bake some cookies for my family and enjoy our time together.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for some great recipes or inspiration in the kitchen, visit my mom’s blog: The Better Baker!

Wife-ly Wednesday

Wifey Wednesday

I’m linking up with Sheila Gregoire’s To Love Honor and Vacuum meme – Wifey Wednesdays today!

I don’t write a whole lot about being a godly wife.  I read a lot about being a godly wife – I pray about being a godly wife to Roy – but it’s an area I do not excel in.  It’s hard for me to write about being honoring to our husbands, because it’s an area I struggle with.

I’m a take charge kind of gal – I was almost 34 when I got married – and I pretty well hung on to some ideas of independence that have been damaging to myself – and to my marriage.

  • I want to run to the next corner, while Roy wants to stop and enjoy the scenery. sigh.
  • I want to know what “our plan” for everything is, while Roy is more relaxed and wants to let things happen, weigh the options, consider our choices.
  • I’m so very impatient and “tap-my-foot” about so many things – and Roy is able to just take a lot of things as they come.

Our differences aren’t the problem.

My attitude is my problem!

My attitude is like the rudder for our family.  Not that I can control the family – but MY attitude certainly steers and guides our family – sets the tone.  And when my attitude stinks – look out!

When my attitude is wrong – it is based on my OWN desires and wants – and I see things going in a direction OPPOSITE of my desires and wants – I pout, I sulk, I get mad, I holler.  I cry, I whine, I get angry.

And when God finally gets my attention – in whatever manner is necessary – sometimes I can turn around and see a path of destruction as big as a hurricane.

It all starts with a focus on ME.

And then I have to repent and seek forgiveness.  I have to find humility and put it on like a robe and go to my husband and my daughters and tell them I know I was wrong and apologize and pray that they forgive me.

God never ever – nowhere in Scripture – says to take care of MYSELF before anyone else.  God never ever – NOWHERE in Scripture – says if I take care of myself then I can take care of my family better.  He never says to put my feelings, my wants, my desires, or my needs first. (If you can find where He says this – feel free to share.)

Can I be honest?

I don’t like that.

Ultimately – I’m selfish.  I want to be able to say “I’m tired – I need to put up my feet and y’all can just give me some ‘me time’ so I can do my thing.”

Nope.  A wife is called to be a servant.  To be in submission to authority – God and my husband.  To be obedient (yep – I choke on that word, too) to her husband.  But Scripture doesn’t mince words about this, whether I like it or not.

I want to spend money without having to answer to ANYBODY.  I want to make decisions without deferring to Roy’s opinion, suggestion, or advice. I want to go and do and not really have to be entirely accountable.

Besides – HE’S not perfect, so why should I have to listen to him?

ACK!  Did you hear that?  Um – my husband does NOT have to be perfect first before I submit to his authority.  I am instructed to obey God – by submitting myself to my husband.

I’m not posting Scriptures here, because I’m going to point you to a post that lays out the truth with all the Scriptures that pierced my heart and convicted me down to my toes.  I could rewrite it – but that is plagiarism.  I could condense it, but miss something really important.

Instead – I’ll just ask you to read A Christian Wife Should Honor and Revere Her Husband for yourself…

The Word of God is the Message here.  It’s not opinion – and it’s certainly not POPULAR opinion.  It is TRUTH – and it is HIS TRUTH that will set us free… It’s a Truth I need to embrace and live out…

Complete Randomness…

I LOVE FALL. I don’t know about any of you, but Fall actually energizes me and makes me happy!  I love the cooler weather, the changing leaves, the crunch of them underneath my foot – even the rain.  How do you feel about Fall? I don’t see it as a precursor to Winter, so much as an end to (hot, humid) Summer – so that’s where I’m coming from!

Speaking of Fall, one reason I enjoy the season is that I love to COOK with Fall ingredients, and I really enjoy making soups & stews and baking breads!  I’m planning to share some recipes (some of my own – and some of my friends!) over the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!

Don’t forget about the Moms Online Bible Study with Jean StockdaleHigh Stepping in Heavenly Places.  (Look how cute the cover of the workbook is – SO totally like my girls!)

Speaking of Bible Study – the Lies Women Believe study I’m in is REALLY impactful!  It really nails some deeply rooted stuff that so many women (not just me) live with.   If you can’t get into a study with someone else, I highly recommend getting the book and the workbook to journal through it yourself!

So, more announcements are coming, but I’ll keep it short & sweet today…

Have a Blessed Day!
